The goal isn’t fewer medications. The goal is the right ones.
Psychiatric medication regimens have a way of growing. One medication for sleep. Another for anxiety. Something to manage a side effect. A new one after a hard year. Before long, the regimen has more entries than reasons.
A medication simplification consultation is a careful, unhurried review of everything you’re currently taking — what’s helping, what’s not, and what may no longer earn its place.
Deprescribing is the medically supervised process of reducing or stopping medications that are no longer needed, no longer helping, or causing more side effects than benefit.
In psychiatry, this requires patience. Many medications shouldn’t be stopped suddenly — gradual tapering protects you from withdrawal, rebound symptoms, and unnecessary turbulence.
Clarity first. We identify the original reason for each medication and whether it still fits.
One change at a time. So we can clearly see what’s working.
A pace that’s right for you. Tapers are individualized to the medication, dose, and your sensitivity.
Flexibility built in. If something doesn’t go well, the plan adjusts. Deprescribing is responsive — never rigid.
Sometimes the right answer is “not yet.” If you’re in a fragile period — recent hospitalization, active suicidal thoughts, severe uncontrolled symptoms, ongoing substance use, or major life upheaval — we usually focus on stabilization first, then revisit.
It can be — when it’s done gradually and supervised. Stopping suddenly is what causes most problems. A planned taper is far safer.
Some tapers are weeks. Others are months. We move at the pace your body and life can tolerate.
When done thoughtfully, many patients keep their stability and feel clearer as side effects ease. We monitor closely and adjust if needed.
Yes — most of this work can happen by telehealth across Texas, with in-person visits when needed.
